  1. PLAN AHEAD....get lots of sturdy cardboard boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, sealing tape, marking pens, furniture covers and a good lock. Lots of smaller boxes are better than a few large ones.

  2. Wrap and box items so that boxes are:

    a. full or boxes will collapse upon stacking. Fill spaces with paper, blankets, sheets, pillows, cushions, or bubble wrap
    b. not too full and bulging, or boxes will tip over when stacked!
    c. the heavier the item, the smaller the box
    d. Box size guide:

    • 1.5 Cube 16" x 13" x 13" tools, heavy objects
    • 2.0 Cube 18" x 15" x 12" plates, glass, china - mark 'fragile'
    • 3.1 Cube 18" x 18" x 16" kitchenware, everyday items
    • 4.0 Cube 18" x 18" x 21" bedding, towels, lighter items
    • bankers/file boxes for papers and documents
    • wardrobe boxes for clothing
    • maximum weight of any box should be about 30lbs

  3. Decide which items you are going to need to access and those you will not.

  4. If you are not storing in a heated unit, be sure that everything that is susceptible to dampness is placed on pallets/skids, off the cement floor. Cement floors can "sweat" during seasonal temperature changes. This will allow for natural air flow around your belongings.

  5. Valuables, especially electronics, should be stored at the back of the unit, off the cement floor and at least one foot 12" from exterior door of your unit.

  6. Protect mattresses, sofas, and chairs with blankets or perforated plastic furniture covers. Tuck fabric softener sheets inside covers.

  7. Label all 4 sides of every box.

  8. Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes, rakes - clean tools first.

  9. Drain fuel from lawn mowers, snow blowers and other machinery.

  10. Remove batteries from battery operated devices.

  11. Wipe chrome and other metal services with some machine oil or WD40 to prevent rust.

  12. Save space by storing sofas on end, and dissassemble table tops and legs.

  13. Store mirrors, pictures and plates vertically on their edge - wrap in ink-free paper.

  14. Wrap and put clothing and other small items in furniture drawers.

  15. Thoroughly clean and dry all appliances, leave open so air can circulate; add a box of baking sode in ovens, micro waves, fridges and freezers.

  16. Clean your BBQ! This is one of the single biggest attractors of rodents to storage units.

  17. Vacuum crumbs out of sofas and chairs.

  18. NO FOOD ITEMS OF ANY KIND, including spices, pastas, flour, sugar, condiments, pet food, and soap.

  19. NO HAZARDOUS, TOXIC OR EXPLOSIVE ITEMS, uncluding gasoline, propane, firearms, ammunition, combustible items, canisters, fuel tanks, aerosol cans, paints, fireworks and paint thinners.

  20. Make sure you have insurance on your contents.
