What is the Ontario Drive Clean Test?
The Ontario Drive Clean test is an emissions test required by law in Ontario for most vehicles. To pass, your car, truck, SUV, or other automobile must meet current Ontario emissions standards.

What Vehicles Need the Ontario Drive Clean Test?
Vehicles that are required to take the test to stay legal in Ontario include:
Light Vehicles
- Cars
- Vans
- SUVs
- Light Trucks & Motorhomes (Gross weight of 4,500 kg or less)
Heavy Vehicles
- Large Trucks & Motorhomes (Gross weight over 4,500 kg)
- Busses
What Vehicles are Exempt from the Ontario Drive Clean Test?
Vehicles that do not need to go through the Drive Clean emissions test include:
- Many hybrid electric cars
- Light Vehicles with a model year dating before 1988
- Historic vehicles (as defined by the Highway Traffic Act)
- Kit Cars
- Motorcycles

When Should I Get the Ontario Drive Clean Test?
If you drive a vehicle over 7 years old, you are required to take the Drive Clean test every 2 years. The Ministry of Transportation should notify you of your need to test when you receive your registration renewal documents.
Please keep in mind that heavy-duty vehicles are required to test every year once they reach 7 years of age.
