Our Story

Gateway Centre for Learning was started by a group of people in the community who loved to read and recognized that too many people in their community didn’t have this ability. They wanted to change this so much that they organized one-on-one tutoring to teach people to read and write at a kitchen table in one of their homes. As this operation grew, they founded the Midland Area Reading Council (MARC) on June 6, 1982.

MARC continued to teach adults to read and write with one-on-one tutoring, but as the times changed, we wanted to include other services that were needed in the community. This meant increasing our services to include math, computer skills upgrading, employment skills training, and life skills training. In 2012, the organization’s name was changed to Gateway Centre for Learning to better reflect the services that we provide.

Gateway Centre for Learning has come a long way and we are proud that people turn to us when they need help and want to improve their skills. We are located in downtown Midland and have dedicated staff, volunteers, and a Board of Directors that work hard towards achieving our mission to teach reading, writing, math, and digital skills in a manner that meets individual needs. We have also expanded what we offer from one-on-one tutoring to include Digital Device Coaching for Seniors, partnership programs with other non-profits, workshops, and technology training for individuals or businesses.

We no longer meet around a kitchen table to teach people reading and writing, but we continue with the idea that began this organization of wanting to help people in our community better their lives.
